I first saw a clip of Grasshopper launching 250 feet into the air, hovering, and landing and it blew. my. goddamn. mind. The fact that in five years we progressed from that to Falcon Heavy and unmanned reusable rockets launching themselves into space, returning, and landing with better accuracy than my dart game still feels like sci-fi. I’m not sure it will ever stop feeling like sci-fi.
HOW IS THIS A THING WE CAN DO?!

HOW IS THIS A THING WE CAN DO?!
Step 1 is beating your head against a desk trying to solve Laplace Transforms. Sometimes you get it wrong: see below.
Fun Fact: Part of that grasshopper mission was a town hall in McGregor, TX, where a bunch of under-40 engineers convincing people to let them fly a rocket.
CORRECTION: Step 1 is a free-body diagram.

Part of me wonders what would have happened if John Carmack would have kept up with Armadillo Aerospace.

Sometimes you get it wrong... again and again and again and...

I totally forgot about Armadillo Aerospace. So many of the X-Prize teams just sorta faded away after Scaled Composites won it

Yeah, fortunately, their mission profile allows for revenue takeoffs to also serve as test landings. That’s not very common in aerospace. For example, airplane customers want landings to be as reliable as takeoffs.

I think I want to work for space X now. Do you think they would hire a middle aged civil engineer?

Only one way to find out!

I just kept thinking, “this is real, this is not CGI, holy MF”, then the freakin’ sonic booms fire off like cannons and you start to hear the final retro burns... “how is this real.”

This is my Physics students’ primary issue, drawing a correct FBD is apparently super hard.

I believe they are supposed to expand their launch pads quite a bit over the coming years so it’s definitely worth a shot. Plus they’ll need stuff built for their Mars dreams in the future.

Just checked, they are hiring for one in Cape Canaveral.

A different example would be: Airplane customers who parachute out of the plane at 10,000 feet are only concerned with successful take-off and level flight.

I could design a poop conveyance system for Mars toilets!

If you’re willing to work for low pay, yes.

But then you just open yourself up to Big Bang Theory references and nobody wants that.
